A History of Warfare

by John Keegan

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Keegan argues that war is a cultural phenomenon rather than simply the continuation of politics by other means, directly challenging Clausewitz. He surveys warfare from the Stone Age through the horse peoples, the age of gunpowder and the nuclear era.

The book is sweeping and stimulating, and its argument has been strongly contested by Clausewitzian scholars. It is worth reading for the breadth of its vision.
