Readings and Reflections

The more you read, the more you know how little you know.

Reading harnesses the mind and keeps it honest about its limits. This is where I keep my reviews, papers and reflections on reading: on war and strategy, the sea, India and its neighbours, and the ideas reshaping our world.

On World Order and its Future Outlook

The phrase 'world order' is used everywhere in geopolitical debate, usually with an adjective in front of it and rarely with a clear meaning. The paper seeks conceptual clarity: what world order describes, and what it is meant to do. It then traces how world order has been built since the World Wars and sets that against the realities of the twenty-first century, concluding that the old order is morphing, the new one has yet to take shape, and the present is best seen as an interregnum.

Grey Zones in Blue Waters

If black and white sit at opposite ends of the spectrum of conflict, peace and war, the grey zone is the contested space between them. The paper asks whether grey zone operations are a distinct form of warfare or an old tactic in new clothes, what their legal limits are, and how they play out at sea. It examines the legitimacy of grey zone strategies and their corollaries in the maritime domain, and suggests options to counter them.

India–Pakistan and Limited War

Since the nuclear tests of 1998, Pakistan has used the nuclear umbrella to push sub-conventional warfare against India, while India looks for room to use conventional force without inviting escalation. The article asks whether a cohesive limited war strategy could deter Pakistan's proxy war while keeping India's conventional superiority, and whether it offers an answer to the India–Pakistan security conundrum.

About

Himadri Bose

I have been a dedicated reader for more than fifteen years. What began as a habit of picking up whatever caught my eye has grown into a steady practice of reading widely, taking notes and writing about the books that stay with me. Since 2019 I have kept a log of every book I read, and I review most of them.

Readings and Reflections is my way of giving something back. Reading has shaped how I think, and I believe it can do the same for others. For about a decade I have also been speaking and lecturing on making reading a way of life, and this site carries that work forward. By sharing my reviews, notes and reading lists, I hope to nurture a culture of reading and encourage more people to pick up books, read them closely and think about what they read.

My interests run across war and strategy, the sea and maritime history, India and its neighbours, great-power politics and the histories behind today's headlines, leadership, and the ideas and technologies, from AI to economics, that are reshaping the world. I have written peer-reviewed articles and book reviews on maritime strategy, limited war and international affairs, published in journals including the Journal of Defence Studies, India Quarterly, Maritime Affairs (the journal of the National Maritime Foundation), the Defence and Diplomacy Journal of the Centre for Air Power Studies, and the Indian Naval Despatch. I have also written for the National Maritime Foundation (NMF) and the Centre for Air Power Studies (CAPS). I serve on the editorial boards of peer-reviewed journals in my field and review for them.
