Eating Grass

by Feroz Hassan Khan

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

The title comes from Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's declaration that Pakistanis would eat grass if necessary to build a bomb. Feroz Khan, a retired brigadier who served in Pakistan's Strategic Plans Division, tells the history of the programme from inside the establishment, covering its scientists, its rivalries and its relationship with the army.

It is the most detailed account available from a Pakistani insider, and it explains how Pakistan's leaders came to see the bomb as essential to survival against India. Readers should keep in mind the author's institutional perspective, but there is no better source on how Pakistan views its own deterrent.
