Embracing Defeat

by John W. Dower

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Dower describes Japan in the years after its defeat in 1945, under the American occupation. He covers the social and cultural experience of defeat, the reforms imposed by the occupation, the new constitution and the war crimes trials.

Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, it is the standard history of the occupation, and it shows how Japan's postwar identity was shaped by both Japanese and American choices.
