From Chanakya to Modi

by Aparna Pande

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Pande traces the roots of India's foreign policy from ancient ideas of statecraft associated with Chanakya, through Nehru's non-alignment, to the more assertive approach under Narendra Modi. She looks at continuities in India's search for strategic autonomy and status.

The book is accessible and gives a useful long view, connecting historical ideas to present choices in India's relations with the great powers and its neighbours.
