Japanese Destroyer Captain

by Tameichi Hara

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Captain Tameichi Hara commanded destroyers through some of the hardest naval fighting of the Pacific War, including the battles around Guadalcanal, and he survived the sinking of the cruiser Yahagi in 1945. His memoir describes torpedo tactics, night actions and the decline of the Japanese navy.

It is one of the few Japanese naval memoirs available in English and is frank about the mistakes of Japanese leadership. Hara emerges as a skilled tactician and a thoughtful critic of the war.
