Kargil: From Surprise to Victory

by V. P. Malik

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

General V. P. Malik, Chief of the Army Staff during the 1999 war, tells the story of Kargil from the initial surprise, when Pakistani troops were found occupying the heights, through the hard-fought campaign to recapture them, including the battles for Tololing and Tiger Hill.

Malik is candid about intelligence failures, equipment shortages and the political constraints under which the Army fought, including the decision not to cross the Line of Control. It is the authoritative account of the war from the top of the Indian Army.
