Midway: The Battle That Doomed Japan

by Mitsuo Fuchida and Masatake Okumiya

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Written by two Japanese officers who took part in the battle, Mitsuo Fuchida and Masatake Okumiya, this was for decades the standard Japanese account of Midway. It describes the planning, the fleet's approach and the destruction of four Japanese carriers on 4 June 1942.

Later historians, notably Parshall and Tully in Shattered Sword, have challenged some of its claims, especially the famous story that Japanese carriers were moments from launching a strike when the American bombers arrived. It remains an important primary source, best read alongside that critique.
