Military Misfortunes

by Eliot A. Cohen and John Gooch

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Cohen and Gooch analyse military failure and argue that it should be understood as an organisational problem rather than the fault of individual commanders. They distinguish failures to learn, failures to anticipate and failures to adapt, and illustrate them with case studies including Gallipoli and the fall of France.

The framework is clear and useful, and the book is essential reading for anyone interested in why militaries fail.
