Requiem for Battleship Yamato

by Yoshida Mitsuru

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Yoshida Mitsuru was a junior officer aboard the battleship Yamato when she sailed on a one-way mission to Okinawa in April 1945 and was sunk by American aircraft. He was one of the few survivors, and he wrote this account soon after the war.

It is a short, intense and literary work that captures the mood of young men sent to certain death, and it reflects on the meaning of their sacrifice. It is considered a classic of Japanese war literature.
