Sea of Thunder

by Evan Thomas

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Thomas tells the story of the naval war in the Pacific through four commanders, two American and two Japanese: William Halsey, Ernest Evans of the destroyer Johnston, Takeo Kurita and Matome Ugaki. Their stories converge at the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944, the largest naval battle in history.

The structure makes the book feel like a novel, and it gives equal weight to the Japanese side. It is especially good on the confusion of command at Leyte and on Halsey's controversial decision to pursue the Japanese carriers.
