Strategy: A History

by Lawrence Freedman

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Freedman traces the idea of strategy from the Bible and Greek myth through military thinkers such as Clausewitz and Jomini, then into revolutionary politics and finally business and the social sciences. His theme is that strategy is about creating power from a situation and is best understood as a story that changes as events unfold.

The scope is enormous and the book is long, but Freedman writes clearly and with wit. It is the best single survey of how humans have thought about strategy, and it widens the subject well beyond war.
