A Short History of Humanity
Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.
Krause, a geneticist who directs the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, and the journalist Thomas Trappe use ancient DNA to tell the story of how Europe was populated. They describe successive waves of hunter-gatherers, farmers from Anatolia and herders from the Steppe, and the spread of diseases such as plague.
The book shows how genetics has transformed the study of prehistory, and its message is that Europeans, like all peoples, are the product of migration and mixing. It makes a natural companion to Tony Joseph's Early Indians.
