Hale surveys a thousand years of naval battles from Salamis in 480 BCE to Tsushima in 1905, describing the ships, tactics and commanders of each era.
Written in the early twentieth century, it reflects the views of its time, but it remains a readable introduction to the major sea battles of history and to how naval warfare evolved before the age of aircraft and submarines.
