Fleet Tactics and Coastal Combat

by Wayne P. Hughes Jr.

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Captain Wayne Hughes' classic examines naval tactics from the age of sail to the missile age. His central argument is that at sea the side that attacks effectively first usually wins, and he develops models of combat power, scouting and the use of firepower.

The second edition adds material on coastal and littoral operations. The book is analytical and rigorous, and its emphasis on scouting and striking first remains essential reading for naval officers thinking about missile warfare.
