How India Sees the World

by Shyam Saran

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Shyam Saran, a former Foreign Secretary, reflects on India's foreign policy from Kautilya to the twenty-first century. He draws on his own experience in Nepal, Myanmar, Indonesia and in nuclear and climate negotiations, and discusses India's relations with China, Pakistan, the United States and its neighbours.

The book combines historical reflection with a practitioner's insight, and it is particularly good on how India's strategic culture and its neighbourhood shape its choices. It reads as advice from an experienced diplomat to those who will follow.
