How to Read a Book

by Mortimer J. Adler and Charles Van Doren

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Adler and Van Doren describe four levels of reading, elementary, inspectional, analytical and syntopical, and explain how to read different kinds of books, from history and philosophy to science and fiction.

First published in 1940 and revised in 1972, it remains a practical guide to reading actively and well. It sits naturally alongside the Reading Choices notes on this site.
