John Paul Jones
Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.
Morison's Pulitzer Prize-winning biography follows the Scottish-born sailor who became a hero of the American Revolution, most famously in the battle between the Bonhomme Richard and HMS Serapis in 1779. It covers his raids on the British coast, his quarrels with Congress and fellow officers, and his later service in the Russian navy.
Written by a naval historian who was also a seaman, the book is strong on seamanship and ship handling. It is a portrait of an ambitious, difficult and brave commander whose reputation became part of the founding legend of the US Navy.
