Military Strategy

by J. C. Wylie

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Rear Admiral J. C. Wylie's short book, first published in 1967, tries to identify a general theory of strategy across services. He contrasts sequential and cumulative strategies and argues that the aim of strategy is control, with the soldier on the ground as the ultimate determinant.

It is concise, lucid and still widely taught. For a naval officer it is especially interesting as a navy man's attempt to think beyond service doctrine about the nature of strategic control.
