Outliers

by Malcolm Gladwell

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Gladwell examines what makes people successful and argues that culture, opportunity and timing matter as much as talent. He looks at examples ranging from Canadian hockey players and Bill Gates to the Beatles and Korean airline pilots.

He popularised the idea that mastery requires about 10,000 hours of practice. The book is engaging, though some of its claims, including the 10,000-hour rule, have been criticised by the researchers whose work it draws on.
