Red Star over the Pacific

by Toshi Yoshihara and James R. Holmes

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Yoshihara and Holmes analyse China's naval rise and how Chinese strategists have used Mahan and other Western thinkers to justify building a powerful navy. They examine Chinese writing on sea power, the development of the People's Liberation Army Navy and its implications for the United States.

Published in 2010 and revised later, the book was one of the first to take Chinese maritime strategy seriously on its own terms. It is an important study for anyone following the balance of power in the Western Pacific and the Indian Ocean.
