R. N. Kao: Gentleman Spymaster

by Nitin A. Gokhale

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Gokhale writes a biography of Rameshwar Nath Kao, the intelligence officer who founded the Research and Analysis Wing, India's external intelligence agency, in 1968. Kao was famously reticent, and much of his work remained secret during his lifetime.

The book covers his role in the 1971 war and the liberation of Bangladesh, the integration of Sikkim into India, and his relationships with Indira Gandhi and other leaders. It offers a rare look at the early history of Indian intelligence.
