The Quiet Warrior

by Thomas B. Buell

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Buell's biography of Admiral Raymond Spruance follows the officer who won the Battle of Midway after stepping in at short notice for Halsey, and who later commanded the Fifth Fleet in the central Pacific campaign, including the Battle of the Philippine Sea.

Spruance emerges as calm, careful and intellectually rigorous, a contrast to the more flamboyant Halsey. The book is one of the classic studies of naval command and of the judgement required to balance risk and opportunity.
