Reimagining Pakistan

by Husain Haqqani

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Haqqani, a former Pakistani ambassador to the United States, examines why Pakistan has struggled to build a stable identity and state. He traces the reliance on religion and hostility toward India as organising principles, the dominance of the army, and the costs of these choices for the economy and society.

The book is critical and written by someone who has been in the system, which gives it authority and also invites charges of partisanship. For Indian readers it offers an inside view of how Pakistan's establishment thinks, and of the debates within Pakistan about a different path.
