Shattered Sword

by Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Parshall and Tully re-examine the Battle of Midway using Japanese records, and overturn several long-held myths, including Fuchida's claim that the Japanese were only minutes from launching a counter-strike. They explain Japanese carrier doctrine, flight deck operations and damage control in remarkable detail.

The book is rigorous, superbly researched and widely regarded as the definitive history of the battle. It is also a model of how to correct the historical record by going back to primary sources.
