The Second World War: A Strategical and Tactical History

by J. F. C. Fuller

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Major General J. F. C. Fuller, the British pioneer of armoured warfare, wrote this analysis of the Second World War soon after it ended. He examines the major campaigns and passes sharp judgement on the strategy of both sides, including the Allied policy of unconditional surrender and the strategic bombing of cities.

Fuller is opinionated and some of his conclusions reflect his own controversial politics, but he writes as a serious military thinker. The book is most valuable for its insistence on asking whether military operations actually served sensible political ends.
