The Anarchy

by William Dalrymple

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Dalrymple tells how the East India Company, a trading business, came to rule much of India between 1756 and 1803. He covers Plassey, the plunder of Bengal, the wars with Mysore and the Marathas, and the decline of Mughal authority.

The narrative is vivid and the research is extensive, though some readers find it long. Its central theme, a private corporation acquiring a state, gives the book contemporary resonance.
