The Evolution of Nuclear Strategy

by Lawrence Freedman

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Freedman's standard history traces how strategists tried to make sense of nuclear weapons from 1945 onward. It covers massive retaliation, flexible response, deterrence theory, arms control and the debates over limited nuclear war.

The book is comprehensive and authoritative, and it shows how much of nuclear strategy was improvisation in the face of an unprecedented problem. It provides essential background for thinking about deterrence in South Asia.
