War & StrategyBook note
Nineteen Stars
Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.
Puryear compares the leadership of four American generals of the Second World War: George Marshall, Douglas MacArthur, Dwight Eisenhower and George Patton. The title refers to the combined number of stars they wore. He draws on interviews and letters to examine their character, preparation and methods of command.
The book's central argument, that character is the foundation of military leadership, is developed further in American Generalship, which is reviewed on this site.
