The Soldier and the State

by Samuel P. Huntington

Description. A short description of a book from my bookshelf, not a review.

Huntington's 1957 classic offers a theory of civil-military relations. He argues that the best arrangement is objective civilian control, in which the military is given autonomy within its professional sphere in return for political neutrality.

The book has shaped thinking about civil-military relations for decades, and its ideas remain central to debates in India and elsewhere about the role of the military in policy.
